St. Marys Cement Becomes First ISO 50001 Certified Operation in North America

The St. Marys Cement plant in St. Marys, Ontario (a.k.a. Votorantim Cimento) has recently completed a Natural Resources Canada program to prove it is ready to qualify for ISO 50001.

The Challenges:

  • High energy consumption in cement production.
  • Lack of understanding of energy bills and their components.
  • Need for a culture shift to recognize energy as a controllable expense.

The 360 Solution

  • Education and Training: Provided mentoring and strategic planning to build an energy management program.
  • Energy Audits: Conducts approximately 30 audits a year to identify areas for improvement.
  • Certification of Energy Excellence: A combination of auditing practices and mentoring site staff.

The Results

  • Cost Savings: Achieved significant cost savings by understanding and managing energy bills.
  • Cultural Shift: Moved from viewing energy as just a number on a balance sheet to a controllable and strategic expense.
  • Industry Recognition: First operation to be ISO 50 001 certified in North America.

“360 energy has started off helping us out to build our process, build our program, really get us off the ground and get us started. Over time that's evolved into a mentoring and support role.”
