Growers in both the vegetable and flower industry converged on the Best Western Brant Park Inn in Brantford on Friday, June 17th to hear 360 Energy and other speakers talk on the subject of Lean Green Management. This year's conference had speakers covering a wide variety of topics including energy curtains, pest control, marketing and plant nutrition. Sessions were separated into flower growers and vegetable growers, and the two programs ran concurrently.
David Arkell, President and CEO of 360 Energy, spoke at the afternoon session in the vegetable program. His session covered the value and benefits for greenhouses of "taking the journey to energy excellence" through the implementation of a variety of processes, programs and projects. As an example of the value, he mentioned that energy benchmarking in Europe discovered that typical greenhouses use 23% more energy than other greenhouses that follow best practices in energy management. This translates to over $15,000 a year per acre or approximately $39,000 a year per hectare for a tomato or pepper greenhouse operation.
The journey to excellence encompasses five elements - energy usage, energy efficiency, supply management, data management and organizational integration - which are dependent on each other and can lead to substantial savings when integrated by the grower. According to him, greenhouses often believe procuring energy is the best way to control costs, yet effectiveness of procuring energy is substantially reduced or even negated when it is undertaken in isolation without considering all of the elements.
The session was met with a positive response from the growers in attendance. An overwhelming majority of the greenhouses in the audience approached Dave and expressed further interest in working towards goals in energy excellence in the near future. As a result of the session, they have all moved closer to a unique solution customized to their greenhouse and are on the journey to energy excellence. 360 Energy also announced that they will be working with Canadian Greenhouse Canada over the next year to document what is currently being done by greenhouses which follow best practices.
